Mum Chau’s (Szechuan)
5B Winner Building, 37 D’Aguilar St, Lan Kwai Fong
(852) 8108 8550
(English reservations)
Lunch and Dinner, set dinner: HK$180 per head; min 2; cash only.

A homely winner with Mum Chau herself at the helm in the kitchen. This is less sophisticated than Da Ping Huo with its far more stylish dÈcor and opera-singing bonus, but I love this place dearly.

Set in an old building which is half residential and half commercial, it does feel like eating in someone’s home with potted plants by the old windows and eclectic pictures on the walls. The food is rustic and down-home, where even a simple plate of stir-fried choi sum with Szechuan peppers becomes a standout dish because of its freshness and simplicity.

The friendly staff bring the dishes out with pride and on quieter nights, mum Chau emerges from the kitchen smelling of spices and happy to chat about the virtues of Szechuan food for the complexion. You can specify how hot you want your food and do take this liberty for be warned, after 5 dishes, this food can overwhelm even the most iron-clad tongues. If it becomes too dangerously hot, Mum Chau has a special cooling jelly on hand to help.
