Hong Kong hotel prices fluctuate like seafood prices. After all it's a matter of supply and demand. Good thing they also seem to respond to downturn in the economy. It does mean that if you know you're visiting during high season or during a popular event, like Rugby Seven, or even a major trade show in a nearby city, you probably would want to book early.

• cheap - those registered with the government as 'guest houses', cheaper than 'budget hotels', but at least you get your own room, usually.


• budget - those registered as hotels but cost less than the other hotels.
