If a typhoon tours Hong Kong the same time as you with a
signal number 8 or higher, you probably need to change your
to-do list since many of the facilities will close and transportation pretty much shuts down. Below are some options.
- Enjoy a nice meal at the hotel restaurant. They probably stay open. After all you the guest has nowhere else to go!
If your hotel does not have a restaurant, it would be good to stock up on food as soon as they do the pre-announcement -
they usually 'pre-announce' two hours ahead of time that they would hoist signal number 8 in 2 hours.
- Like what some locals do in typhoon - play mahjong. The hotel might just have a set they can loan you. Hey, the manager
might even volunteer to 'teach' you - and make a few extra bucks from you the sheep!
- Borrow some board games from the hotel. If they don't have any, they should have at least playing cards. If they
don't even have that, then buy some at the convenience store. If you're traveling alone, invite your neighbors and have an
instant party!
- Borrow or rent a DVD player and a DVD and watch a movie. The movie
'Twister'
might just be the right choice!
- Join the locals in catching a movie at the cinema.
- Curl up with a steaming cup of tea and a nice book.
- Fill up the tub and enjoy a bubble bath.
- Go to the harbour waterfront and watch the waves.
Now we're certainly not recommending or even suggesting this. We're just saying that some locals without sense do that.
With the wind and rain, there are many things that will fly around and one of them might just find your body and, God forbids,
slices a part off! Consider yourself warned!
- If you're in a harbor view room, you just might want to change rooms especially if it's signal number 10 - which means
a direct hit. Most likely nothing will happen, but the howling wind and the window panes bending to the rhythm of each gust
will get your blood pressure up. Stay away from the windows!
Whatever you do, be safe!
